17 Animals That Live In Water (Updated 2022+Images)

Animals don’t always live where they’re born. Some species migrate from place to place, while others adapt to their new environment.

What animals only live in water?

Some Animals that live in water include Crab, Fish, Seal, Dolphin, jellyfish, Octopus, Shark, Seahorse, Walrus, Starfish, Hippo, Manatee. Water covers over 70% of our planet and some animals live exclusively in water.

Animals That Live In Water :

Crab

Crabs are some of the most fascinating creatures around. They come in all shapes and sizes, from tiny ones to giant ones.

Crabs always live in water because they need to eat algae for food. They do not like eating other types of foods such as plants, fish, or meat. When they find something edible, they pull it into their mouths using their claws.

They do not always live in water, they may also be found living in sand, mud, and other places. They usually live in shallow water where they can hide from predators.

Where do they live?

Crabs are crustaceans that belong to the arthropod class. They have eight legs, two pairs of antennae, and three pairs of eyes. Some species are omnivorous, meaning they eat both plants and animals. Others are carnivores, feeding only on other animals.

There are over 2,500 known species of crab worldwide. Most crabs live in shallow water near shorelines or estuaries. The majority of them spend their lives crawling along the bottom of the ocean floor.

Fish

Fish live in water, right? Well, not necessarily. There are thousands of species of fish living in freshwater, saltwater, and even underground. What makes them special? And where do they live?

Fish don’t always live in water, but they do need water to survive. Fish breathe air and use oxygen from the atmosphere just like we do. However, fish cannot live for long periods out of water, so they must return to the surface at least once per hour.

Fish are marine animals, which means they live in the ocean. However, some species of fish can be found living in freshwater rivers and lakes.  They are cold-blooded animals that require a steady temperature to survive.

They also have fins instead of limbs and gills instead of lungs. These features make them unique from other vertebrates.

Water is the preferred environment for fish because it provides them with oxygen and nutrients. Air is also good for fish, but it requires special equipment to provide the necessary oxygen.

Seals

Seal do not need to be in water to survive. They can live on land, sea, or air. However, they prefer to stay in water.

Seals are mammals, which means they give birth to live young. The gestation period for seals is about 11 months.

Seals are marine mammals that live in cold waters around the world. They spend much of their lives underwater, and they are able to dive for long periods of time. The seal has a thick layer of blubber which keeps them warm when they’re submerged.

Dolphin

Dolphins are known for their intelligence, social skills and playful nature. They are also very curious creatures who love exploring new places. Where do they live?

Dolphins always live in water because they need to breathe air through their blowhole. The blowhole is located at the top of their head, which allows them to breathe air when they dive underwater.

They are marine mammals, which means they live in both oceans and rivers. They are also known as porpoises, and are part of the cetacean order.

Some of these marine animals live in tropical waters, while others prefer colder climates. Some even migrate between oceans.

jellyfish

Jellyfish are aquatic animals that live in oceans around the world and they live in both fresh and saltwater, although they prefer freshwater environments.

They also like to hide under rocks, logs, and other debris.

Jellyfish are usually found in warm waters near coastal areas. They spend their lives floating at the surface of the ocean. When conditions become too hot or cold, they move into deeper water.

Jellyfish are found in oceans around the world. Most species are harmless, but some can cause painful stings. The stingers of jellyfish are barbed and contain nematocysts, microscopic capsules containing venomous chemicals.

Octopus

Octopuses live in the ocean, but they don’t like to be touched. They prefer to hide under rocks and wait for food to come to them. If you want to touch one, ask permission first.

Octopuses are fascinating creatures. They have eight arms, each of which contains two sucker-like tentacles. These suckers allow them to attach themselves to almost anything, including rocks, plants, or other animals.

Octopuses also have a highly developed nervous system, allowing them to move their arms independently.

Octopuses don’t usually live in water, but some species are adapted to living underwater. Some scientists believe that these adaptations allow them to breathe air. Others argue that they are simply using the ocean floor as a habitat.

Shark

Shark is an aquatic animal. They usually live in the ocean or freshwater. Some species also live in rivers, lakes, swamps, estuaries, and even brackish waters. Sharks are found in every major ocean around the globe.

They do live in water. Sharks are fish which have gills and swim through the ocean using their fins. They also have teeth for eating other animals like fish and crustaceans.

Some species of sharks are known as great whites, hammerheads, tiger sharks, bull sharks, etc.

Sharks are carnivorous animals. They feed on other fishes, cephalopods, crustaceans, mollusks, and occasionally even smaller sharks. They are equipped with sharp teeth that enable them to slice through flesh and bone.

Seahorse

Sea horses are beautiful creatures from the ocean. They look similar to horses, but they don’t belong to the same family. Seahorses live in the water, but some species also live on land.

Ocean sea horses are usually found near coral reefs or seagrass beds. They breathe air through their skin and eat plankton and other food floating in the water.

However, sea horses aren’t limited to oceans. Some species also live on land, such as the African pygmy horse, the Japanese firehorse, and the Chinese firehorse. These animals are called cetaceans (or whales) because they swim using flippers instead of legs. All these animals live in the sea, but only the seahorse has webbed feet.

Walrus

Walruses are large marine mammals that spend their entire lives in ice waters. They are known to swim through ice floes and even dive into the ocean from land. This makes them very unique creatures.

They are found in Arctic waters. They spend their lives in the sea, but they also come ashore to rest and sleep.

Walruses are the largest species of seal. They weigh between 1000 and 1500 kgs and measure up to 9 feet long from nose to tail. The average lifespan of a walrus is around 40 years.

They are known for their thick fur and tusks. Their tusks are unique because they grow continuously throughout their lifetime.

Starfish

Starfish are amazing creatures. They are able to regenerate their entire body after being cut into pieces. This ability has fascinated scientists since ancient times.

Starfish do not always live in water, they can also be found living on land. However, they prefer to stay in water. They are able to survive for long periods of time out of water, but they cannot swim well.

They are also known as sea stars because they look like stars. In fact, some species are called “sea stars” or “starfishes”.

Hippo

Hippos are known for their aquatic lifestyle, but did you know they also spend time out of the water? Hippos are often found basking in the sun or even sleeping on land.

While hippos spend much of their lives in water, they are able to survive on land for short periods of time.

In fact, some hippos have been observed resting on dry land for several days at a time.

Manatee

Manatees are large aquatic mammals found in tropical waters around the world. They are known for their slow movements and gentle nature. Are they really living underwater all the time?

Manatees spend much of their lives submerged in shallow coastal waters, where they feed on sea grasses and other vegetation. While some species spend part of the year in saltwater estuaries, manatees prefer freshwater environments.

Manatees do not like to be out of water. They prefer to stay in freshwater, such as rivers, lakes, or oceans. However, they may venture into saltwater when they need to feed.

Baikal seal

The Baikal seal is a species of seal found only in Lake Baikal, Russia. They spend most of their lives in the water, but they do come out onto land for mating and birthing. the largest freshwater lake in the world.

This aquatic mammal spends its life submerged under the surface of the water, feeding on fish and crustaceans. These animals are not known to migrate between lakes or rivers.

platypus

Platypuses have a unique way of life. They spend most of their time underwater, where they eat fish and eels. Their webbed feet allow them to swim through rivers and streams.

Platypuses do not always live in water. They are mammals that lay eggs and give birth to live young. The platypus has webbed feet and lays eggs like birds.

There are many animals that don’t seem to belong in their environment. The platypus is one such creature. This amazing animal lives in Australia and has some very strange habits.

turtle

Turtles always live in water. They cannot survive outside water for long periods of time. However, they do need to breathe air occasionally. During these times, turtles must climb out of the water and onto land. Once on land, they may eat plants or other animals.

All turtles live in water. They usually stay in freshwater, but some species also live in saltwater.

Turtles are reptiles which means they breathe air through lungs instead of gills. Their shells protect them from predators.

Penguin

Penguins are known for their aquatic lifestyle, but they also enjoy living in dry land. The question is, why would they choose to live in such harsh conditions?

Penguins always live in water.  They are flightless birds native to Antarctica. They spend much of their lives underwater, where they feed on fish and crustaceans.

In addition to being cold-blooded, penguins lack sweat glands and cannot regulate their body temperature.
